Perth-based Forrestania Resources (ASX: FRS) has intersected multiple thick pegmatites in a maiden drilling program at the Calypso target within its flagship Forrestania project in the southern Yilgarn region of Western Australia.
The company completed 14 reverse circulation holes for 1968 metres to define the extent of the stacked pegmatites which were first identified in historic mapping and drilling results.
It now plans to investigate the potential of the pegmatites to host lithium mineralisation.
Multiple zones
Pegmatite was intercepted in 13 holes, with multiple zones of significant widths measuring up to 63m.
A total of 65 pegmatite intervals were encountered across the holes for a cumulative total of 456m logged pegmatite.
Drill hole samples will be dispatched to Perth this week and a full suite of assays is expected within the next six weeks.
Further pegmatites
Managing director Michael Anderson said the company was pleased to confirm further pegmatites of significant thickness within the Forrestania tenure.
“Calypso is only 4.5 kilometres from a known mineralised pegmatite , so any occurrence of pegmatite within this area is significant to us,” he said.
“Geological and geochemical information gathered from this drilling program will assist with vectoring towards further prospective zones within and surrounding the extensive Calypso pegmatite bodies.”
Lithium drilling program
Lithium-focused drilling commenced at the Forrestania project earlier this month covering the high-priority Calypso, South Ironcap East and Giant targets.
Drilling aims to validate and extend historic pegmatite intercepts with deeper holes and testing along strike of the anomalous soil trend.
Calypso is believed to be a prospective host for lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites based on anomalous soil geochemistry, outcropping pegmatites and pegmatite intercepts in historic drilling.
Forrestania said the target possesses “all the right criteria” for a potentially-significant lithium discovery.
This includes promising soil geochemistry; positive pegmatite intercepts from historic drilling; and a favourable geological setting in the Forrestania greenstone belt, overlying ultramafic and mafic rocks which are believed to be the preferential host for pegmatite intrusions.
